just put a sponge in the filter along wioth some filter floss. The sponge will maintain the bacteria and the floss will filter particles. FYI Aqua-tech is made by Marineland.

Ditto to all of the above. Clams are sold in lfs occassionally but they njeed to be in a well established tank that would provide plenty of food.

Why not just get a 5gallon bucket with a top to house the fish in rather than bags. You can do a bucket for the cichlids and another for the eel. Fill them 1/2 way with water and go. If you are really worried you can buy a battery powered air pump from Petsmart or a local bait shop and supply...

Sounds like possible mating. Is your tank planted? They are egg scatterers so live plants work great. Lots of live and/or rich foods will help induce spawning.
