discus not eating, not looking very good

I have had the best luck getting non feeders to start eating by treating them with Hexamit. Has worked for me time and time again.

strange thing on rock and sand like dust

If you are getting some type of sediment (which I would assume is what is happening) on your rocks and sand I would try increasing the amount of water flow... ie..adding powerhead(s). This should keep things stirring until it can be filtered out.

I can't get the pH down

You will have to soften the water in order to maintain a lower pH steadily. Before doing that however, I would consider the fact that livebearers actually prefer a slightly alkaline pH and your Guppies should do fine at 7.5/7.6. It is much easier to keep the pH at what it comes out of the tap...

    Ropefish

One thing I do know about them is they are one of, if not the, best escape artists in the world of FW fish. I have had them to escape from a tank with only an opening that I didn't think a fire ant could pass through. You gotta have a tightly sealed top or your guy is living on borrowed...

    Slime? over live rocks?

What you have is in fact die off on your new rock, which is what has caused the ammonia spike. Make sure you have good water circulation and a good protein skimmer. With uncurred live rock this is not unusual. Frequent water changes should also help keep the ammonia to a minimum during the...

    Mandarin Goby

Mandarin Dragonettes are very beautiful fish but they have a more specialized diet than a lot of other marine fish (this has led to a high mortality rate in the pet trade for this fish). These guys usually only do well in really established reef tanks. Reason being is they will only eat live...

    Very Bad Algae Problem

A good UV sterilizer will cure this problem and keep your water crystal clear everyday for the rest of it's existence (as long as you change the bulb every 1-2 years). Just make sure to get one that's enough watts for your pond and that your flow rate passing thru it is within the acceptable...

    How do I know....

Pellets will not hurt them. My four eat pellets along with a variety of other foods. One thing I have noticed when Angels are fixing to breed is they will start to clean the surface with their mouth of the place they plan to lay the eggs. Sometimes on the underside of a broad leaf, sometimes...

    Gourami behavior

Generally, the Dwarf Gouramis (your Powder Blues, Flame, Male Dwarf) and a few other varieties are not that aggressive unless two males are crowded into too small a tank. Pearl Gouramis, Honey, Sunset, Platinums, and Opalines fall into this category to an extent as well. On the otherhand the...

    Filtration/Water Quality Issues with Fry

I had several thousand Koi eggs to hatch in a fiberglass container that is about 250 gallons. I have 4 airstones running and some Anacharis, Hyacinth, and water lettuce floating in there. Obviously, I can't run any type motorized filter (these are basicly swimming eyes in there). I do not...

    My Pond

When I saw that pic of those Koi my heart fluttered. That is IMPRESSIVE!! That would make any Koihead drool. Sorry u lost a couple of fish. I had 8 of my adults wash out during a flood a couple of weeks ago (probably $1500 worth of fish). It is definately a disheartening thing to discover...

    advice on cichlids

While it is possible to mix different type Cichlids and other fish, you cannot possibly provide them all with the optimum conditions that simulate their natural environment. African Cichlids are generally the most aggressive type Cichlids. They come from Rift Lakes in Africa where the water is...

    I want some babies

Sarassa Comets and Calico Shibunkin are both hardy fish that will usually readily reproduce in a pond. The Sarassa Comets have more of a red and white vs. the orange that you see in most Pond Comets. Feed them plenty of food high in protein prior to spawning time so the females will be plump...

    Small Koi for sale...

I have an assortment of domestic Koi I have raised ranging from 3"-5". Their is a mixture of butterflies and standards. Would prefer to sell them locally rather than ship but would ship at buyers expense. I have around a thousand or better. Will take $1.00 ea. I am located in Northwest GA and...

Green Sea Serpant losing his legs

I have heard, and actually witnessed, that serpent stars are especially sensitive when it comes to acclimating to new conditions. Most fish and inverts. can tolerate surprisingly wide variation in salinity (though not to variations in pH and/or temp.) when being transferred to new environment...

    True Perculas

As a retailer I would stock tank raised fish over WC anyday. The difference in survival rate is amazing, especially with Perc's. It may take a little more time but I have had tank raised clowns take on an anemone as a host many times. The ones in the wild have to at some point learn or...

    black algae

Not sure what causes it but I had the same problem a while back. I did a pretty big water change and added two Flying Fox fish. There are 2 species of Flying Fox and I can't remember their names but these were the ones that grow bigger. From the time I put them in there I never saw them quit...

    Wal-Mart should not sell fish!

I think the Walmart in my area purposely make their fish look pitiful swimming around amongst dead tankmates so people will want to rescue them from their less than optimal environment. A marketing scheme if you will. I hope not but it sure seems that way. What amazes me is the fish prices at...

    lace rock

Most lava rock encountered in LFS's is a man made product and is perfectly safe for any marine aquarium. Natural lava rock on the other hand, often rich in sulfur and metals, should not be used due to potential pollution it may introduce into the aquarium. Similar to lava rock, Tufa rock makes...

    compatabilty

I have seen instances where it takes 6 weeks or better before the clown finally decides to take up with the host anemone. Other times it happens within minutes. Certain clowns seem more likely to form this relationship than others. Wild caught clowns are much more dependant on a host anemone...
