Getting a free 29g with fish.

and he never asked his wife for permission to give me his tank, and when he mentioned it she said no. Just need a small repair on the cross brace, a leak test, some minor adjustments to the new tank stand, and I'm ready to set up. Probably start fishless cycle with a few plants until I...

Getting a free 29g with fish.

lol, from what I understand it "looks" like a sturgeon, but it's something else :). I'll know more when I see it. I'll add lots of pictures for proper ID.

Getting a free 29g with fish.

I'm not entirely sure what fish the tank is coming with. I think one of them is a pleco, and one of them looks like a sturgeon, but beyond that I'm not sure yet, he's supposed to send me pictures. I believe this tank has mostly large fish with 4-6 occupants. This tank has been up and running for...

    Quality backgrounds?

I'm also looking at what I can do for a background. I definitely do not want a fake plants/rock picture, but for the health and well being of the fish I have to cover the back with something. If I don't figure something out I may just put a green, blue, or black background. I thought of creating...

Getting a free 29g with fish.

I've been planning an aquarium for a long time now but haven't had fish in decades (had a freshwater tank as a teenager). I have acquired quite a bit of equipment in the way of tanks, pumps, and heaters. I recently acquired a 55g tank which ended up being useless for what I wanted to do. A...

New 55g tank, needs new stand.

Hey all. I recently acquired a 55g wide aquarium. The stand is made of useless particle board that's falling apart/disintegrating so I'm planning a building a new stand for it. The tank is a raised bottom tank (weight sits on the frame, not the bottom glass), so my plan is to use 1" plywood to...

    Hello from Canada

Hey All. I'm back. And forth. And fifth, etc. :) Update: My puffer tank got mothballed. I couldn't keep my snails alive (live puffer food), and couldn't figure out why they kept dying, so I dropped it for now. At this point I'm planning a vivarium (frog terrarium), and setting up a...

How soon can I change water

The store guy was wrong. After finishing a fishless cycle most of us here do big water change with properly condition water (ie: treated with prime) before adding fish. What are you using for a dechlorinator? As long as you're treating the water with a proper conditioner you can do a water...

i want a blue ring octopus!

From wiki "The blue-ringed octopus, despite its small size, carries enough venom to kill 26 adult humans within minutes. Furthermore, their bites are tiny and often painless, with many victims not realizing they have been envenomated until respiratory depression and paralysis start to set in."...

26 gallon freshwater build: Open to help and suggestions!

    26g(us) * 3.78541178 = 98.42070628L (1.58% error is acceptable so I rounded up to 100L to make the rest of the math easier) Each liter has 1000mL so 100 liters = 1000 * 100 = 100,000mL 4ppm of 100,000mL is 0.4mL (thats 0.4mL of pure ammonia)-> 4 / 1,000,000 * 100,000 = 0.4 Now using 10%...

26 gallon freshwater build: Open to help and suggestions!

You have a fish in cycle, so ammonia is added by the fish. If you were doing fishless you have to add it yourself using pure ammonia, (pure meaning no additives). Keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite and if either get above 0.25ppm then do a PWC to get it back down. For the air pump I was...

    Aquarium or terrarium?

How thick the glass is depends somewhat on whether or not it's tempered glass. Is there any warnings on the bottom or anywhere saying not to drill it? If you could post a picture someone might recognize it and tell you which it is.

26 gallon freshwater build: Open to help and suggestions!

If the air pump is sitting on a hard surface the vibration can make it twice as loud. To test try picking it up while it's running. If it gets quieter while holding it then try sitting the air pump on top of a piece of foam.

Ammonia levels in tank (yes, I'm a noob)

Are you treating your water with Prime water conditioner? It is very concentrated so it will be somewhat difficult to measure out a small enough amount for a 10g water change, but it can help prevent the ammonia from hurting the fish while you're trying to establish your cycle. Don't be afraid...

    plants and snails

They generally eat dead plant matter and excess feed, which makes them good. Thats totally up to you. Some people dislike snails, others think they look fine. If you overfeed a lot you will get tons of snails, which people often find unattractive.

    Diffuser Location

As far as I understand disolved CO2 does not displace disolved oxygen and stauration levels of oxygen and CO2 are independent of each other. The extra CO2 should not bother the bacteria.

    Help! Algae!!

When making wine the heaviest production of CO2 is in the first week. It starts to taper off after that and is pretty much done after 3-4 weeks. Higher temperature will increase the speed this happens (as long as it's not too warm). Also when mixing the batch adding more yeast will increase...

    Help! Algae!!

How long has it been running? Off the top of my head there are two reasons it will start running slower. 1) as the yeast uses up the sugar it will produce CO2 slower and slower because it has less food to convert. 2) after running for a while the alcohol produced will become concentrated...

Brand New To The Hobby...Please Help

So far everything looks good. I'd say you're doing it correctly. Two things to watch for, 1) if your pH drops too low it can cause problems, 2) and if your nitrites get too high I've heard it can cause problems as well. A big water change and then re-dose ammonia can solve both those problems...

    Lighting sure is hard

I've heard of some fish that use the moon cycle to breed and a moonlight that brightens and darkens like the actual moon over 4 weeks helps them do that, but for the most part the moonlight is for the people not the fish. A light fixture that allows you to operate the bulbs independently would...

    Pvc

PVC is generally inert unless it's heated (by heated I mean burning or otherwise damaging it with heat). If you burn PVC it will release poisonous and toxic gasses. So in an aquarium setting the PVC should remain inert. It is used in plumbing. Most houses built these days have PVC pipes. Some...

The directions on the Prime bottle say to treat for the entire volume of the tank when added directly to the tank, which in your case is 65g. My suggestion would be to put the required dose of Prime in a container, and fill the container over top your aquarium, then pour the water and prime...

Frozen food thawed. Can i refreeze

As food is thawing out it will start to build up bacteria. The warmer it gets the faster the bacteria builds up. When the bacteria population is high enough it will make you sick. When you refreeze the food it doesn't kill the bacteria. The bacteria basically goes into hibernation. As you thaw...

Brand New To The Hobby...Please Help

Yeah you'll want to test daily but in the beginning you can just test for ammonia. When ammonia levels start to drop you can start testing for nitrites and nitrates. Keeping a log of the test results and dosing schedual can definately help identify and correct any problems. One tip I hear a...
