    Fixing someone's mistake

If you use some HOT water and a little vinegar and give it a good cleaning you should be OK. One thing I would check though is the seals inside the tank, make sure they are OK before dumping 55G of water into the tank and having it run into the living room.

    set up for cichlids...

Another idea for gravel filtration would be under gravel heater, which is supposed to keep the gravel compact free?

    set up for cichlids...

Yup ditto to voodoo. I have a cichlid tank with a crushed coral substrate and they much prefer it to normal gravel.

    What's an appropriate Nitrate level?

In a newly cycled tank there should only be trace nitrAtes, probably none. As the tank matures you could be looking at peaking at 20, which would be within OK parameters, i.e. tolerable for the fish, but any higher could be hazardeous.

My fake plants are turning brown?!?!

I put my lights on timers so my tanks get at least 10 hours of light. the ebo jagers are supposed to be good, but I don't know what you can get there by you? I use a different heater as I cannot get the Ebos here.

    55 Gallon Cichlids

How about some Rainbows, placid fish. They might be a bit too docile but they are nice looking fish. I have a pair and had them with my firemouths and convicts.

    55 Gallon Cichlids

I had my convicts in my 130G with an almost fully grown Jaguar, a fully grown Parrot and Gold Severum and they also ran in fear when my two were breeding.

    55 Gallon Cichlids

Hey JTA, I have kept Firemouths, which I still have, and convicts in a 40G with no problems. Yes there was the odd skirmish when the convicts bred and visa versa, but none were killed or injured. The Firemouths like the convicts get just as aggressive as the convicts given the space and some...

    Biorb

I have seen them and they are pretty cool looking. They would mainly be used for lighting, as they are rather bright.

My NEW cycling 59 Gal tank.

Hey there total, Sorry I am responding a little late, but have been fairly busy recently, no excuse I know but........... I have always had a fondness for Cichlids so I would recommend some smaller ones eg the Apistogammis (sp?), I have liked the Kribensis and even Rams. They won't get too big...

Any one had this problem with clown loaches not eating?

The CL are some of the nicest loaches. They are more active at night when the lights go out, so throw something in with them just after the lights have gone out.

Hmm I noticed as well how expensive the marines are. I was planning on setting one up but I have to reconsider now as we are moving and will look into it once we have moved properly.

Hey cat, Firstly welcome and not being from the Uk you have to excuse the ignorance, but Suffolk is the East of England is it not? Sort of close to the continent? If so have you ever been to Dartford and Dartford Aquatics? Very cool and a good selection of fish, they have beautiful Angels if...

Pre-used Driftwood Making a Tank murky?

I'd agree better safe than sorry, and give it a good soaking for a couple of days.
  20. S

Adding Driftwood during cycle ~ is this a no no?

It would help in the cycle as it is more place for the bacteria to grow and get used to.

    oscars

Pretty cool and congrats, Being cichlids and being very paternal (sp?) they will do everything in their power to protect babies. My Jaguars do the same thing. Really cool to watch. Enjoy.

Hey Vicshaw, Where abouts is Boston?
  23. S

    not sick yet, but...

I would think do what you did with the otos, add a little tank water every 10min for about an hour and let them slowly adjust to the drop in pH.

what kind of snail is this?

No they are harmless to fish. They won't just disappear if you take out the plants it depends on our much food watse and other things that will determine whether the snails come and go. Personnaly I have found only good things from snails inmy tank, others might disagree.

    Responsible Aquarists

I only test the water in my Discus tank. My other tanks I don't test unless there is a problem with the fish or something else is amiss. I do a weekly water change on the discus tank and a 2 weekly on the others.
