Yep. My API kit went bad too. I tested my tap water with it and discovered it was wrong, as the test indicated we were six times the limit. Not so. I don't know why the API kit went bad. I always shook mine. But a new kit is probably the solution.

I believe in buying local ad much as possible. But when buying local means buying from unethical, unhelpful, predatory merchants, then the open marketplace must prevail and the better competitor will get my business. I'm feeling disappointed in my API right now. My nitrate test kit is reading exceptionally high--like seven to ten times the correct amount. It's frustrating because they aren't expired and I follow the directions. I'm looking into some other options too.

You get what you pay for, and I guess. Is red sea any good? I've seen how their nitrate test is read and it looks pretty cool, and less subjective.

ccCapt: I'm starting to agree with you about API tests. The nitrate test I have is running about ten times higher than it should be and they have no response to that. I didn't realize that until after I ordered their calcium test, though. Do you prefer salifert or red sea?

A dsb requires the sand remain undisturbed so that the anaerobic bacteria can grow. Plus its more likely to develop pockets of hydrogen sulfide which can royally kill everything if they get disturbed. So having a dsb in the display means avoiding residents who will disturb the bed so much...
