Well, the heater was 10 years old. I should have known better. I threw that thing in the trash and don't know the manufacturer. Question: Do you think it killed my bacteria? Would like to start restocking soon and I'm wondering about this.

As a brand, Hikari beats Tetra. Many on this site prefer New Life Spectrum brand. I use New Life Spectrum Cichlid pellets myself.

I had two severums and a fire mouth together and they never bothered each other. Also had two blue gouramies in there. Everyone was fine for years.

So far I'm very happy with my new filter. Past couple of days I tested: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 40 nitrates one day, but 20 since then ( after PWC). My water is crystal clear and together the two Aquaclears are VERT quiet! I would notice a mini cycle right away, correct?

If there is anything in your Emperor that you can put into your new filter, do that. The paper on your bio wheels are FULL of beneficial bacteria. You can pull that paper off and stick it somewhere in your new filter.

Ok, Aquaclear set up last night. I took apart the biowheel and the paper came off in two accordion pieces. One of those pieces is in the Aquaclear, along with the bio rings. Last week, I stuck two sponges in my Emperor to get the bacteria going. Those two sponges are also in the new filter...

I have found this site very helpful for my tank. I have switched to Prime, purchased an API test kit, added an additional filter, and feed a better diet (NLS pellets and Veggie Flakes from Kensfish). I don't think I would have done any of these things without hearing about them on this site...

Haha! No way that cartridge would fit! I think moving the biorings over as well as the paper from the biowheel will be plenty to prevent a mini cycle and seed the new media.

My 46 gallon Bowfront Heres my cichlid set up. Most fish have been in there for over a year. I keep aggression down by having one specimen per species. I did have to remove an auratus within 6 weeks of putting him in.

I bought an Aquaclear 50 and a years worth of sponges. Sent off my rebate form and UPC's. Got six new sponges in the mail today. Maybe a ten day turnaround.

I purchased the Single Bright 36". They were pretty dim and I exchanged them for the Double Brights. Much better! I don't keep live plants, but if I did I might go for the Reef Capable.

I do a 25% PWC with a gravel vac every weekend. I do a 15% PWC with no gravel vac midweek. My Nitrites and ammonia stay at zero and Nitrates less than 30. Works for my tank and I'm generous with food, compared to some.
