    Carey's 125G Upgrade/Conversion Thread

This may be stupid advice, but try putting the PH on the output side of the fluval. Putting the power head on the other side of the fluval output may be creating a nice little circulation that hinders the poop from going into the intake.

    55 gallon oscar tank.

2 oscars, a red blood parrot, and a jack dempsey? In a 55 gal? I promise you that won't work. They may be small now, but will get real big real fast and it's gonna get nasty (both water quality and aggression.

    whole set up and everything

Ya +1 on the sand it's the best for cichlids.

    whole set up and everything

I would start with central American convicts. They are extremely easy to keep and they are beautiful.

    how big do cichlids

That spotted puffer will probably kill your cichlids. Those dudes are evil. I put a spotted puffer in with my 9 inch Oscar and my Oscar was hiding in a cave for a week. I lifted up the cave to see what the deal was and his fins were eaten almost completely off thanks to the puffer fish. Be...

    Ich or not?

I have a small Texas cichlid (about 3 inches) and she has a small salt size grain spot on her fin. I thought it was Ich, so I raised the temp to 86 and put aquarium salt in the tank. 3 weeks have passed and the salt grain sized spot is still on her fin. She is acting totally fine with not...

What would be a compatible clean up crew for an mbuna cichlid tank?

I think the best clean up crew for your fish tank would be yourself. There is no fish that eats other fishes waste. You could get an algae eating pleco if you like, but they create lots of waste as they get bigger. IMO I'd just forget about the clean up fish and clean it up by water changes.

    Stocking a 55g to eventually turn into a 125g

I'm usually all for keeping agressive fish together within reason, but it's with oscars I have to draw the line. A 155 should be big enough for just the pair, but I can't see other fish living long past 5 months or so. Trust me, oscars can and will swallow anything they can fit in their mouths...

    Could i add a fish

I believe he's being facetious. To mfdrookie, No, with obvious questions, then common sense would come into play. Would you want to take advise from a person who has never had any experience with the issue? I sure wouldn't.

    Could i add a fish

Very true, dually noted. Constant monitoring of behavioral signs of aggression would be needed.

    Could i add a fish

I'm sorry if I came across as rude. I did not mean to at all. I respect your opinion and with the experience you have with keeping large fish, your opinion has more weight. I agree with you on the fact that a bigger tank would be a better, more suitable environment. I am speaking on behalf of...

    Could i add a fish

I am just stating my point of view. I have personally kept these fish in a 75 gallon tank. I have seen other setups were it has been done. Im not saying anyone on here does this, but people will just tell a person "oh you can't do that, you need at least a 125 gallon for the cichlid", and the...

    Could i add a fish

A Texas, jack, severum, and convict can and will work in a 70. I've seen similar setups like that and with proper landscaping and filtration it is definitely possible.

    Could i add a fish

Rehome 80% of the fish? So he can only have one of those fish in a 70 gallon? That's not practical. I do agree that all of the fish he mentioned will not work together, but I think if he rehomes the Oscar, it can be possible. Practical? No. Possible? Yes. Look at it this way. Let's say he walks...

    Sick Jack Dempsey

I am having problems seeing the spot on his fin in the pic. You say it has grown considerably? If I were you, I would not bother with medications. I find the most effective way is to raise the temp in your tank to 86 degrees, and put some aquarium salt in there (1 tbsp per 5 gallons). Give it...

    Could i add a fish

Lol seriously tho, has anyone noticed the type of waste an Oscar creates? It's insane. Instead of small, stringy waste like other cichlids, an Oscar will produce big, thick poops. Sometimes they are so big the dang fish will rub em off on a rock or something. It may be just my experience, lol.

Switching to New Life Spectrum, Few Questions

New Life Spectrum is a great product IMO. I have the 1mm sinking pellets and the fish love them. I believe the color enhancing ingredients help give the fish their breeding colors. I noticed my female Texas get a deep black belly after a few weeks of the pellets.

    Fin Rot question

I doubt what you're experiencing is fin rot, as that is usually uncommon. You have some aggression, thereore leading to nipped fins. Find the trouble maker, rehome it, and let the nipped fins heal. You should see results in about a month.

    new here...please help!

I personally think the convicts and the yellow lab cichlids will work out as far as aggression. Yellow labs are not really aggressive compared to the convict and my convicts have never bothered them. I'm not so sure about the assorted Africans. It could be a hit or miss. IMO you should rehome them.

    Cichlids w/plants.

True, I have yellow labs who will eat plants down to the roots within two days. As far as peacocks, I haven't had any problem. I'm not sure if that's the norm but my peacocks have not bothered with plants.

    Could i add a fish

Yes you should be totally fine adding that Texas hybrid. If you didn't have the Oscar in there then you'd be ok. I find that oscars create an astonishing bioload compared to the other cichlids. Ive see them take human-size dumps.
