Stocking advice for my 33g community

Hello. I'm would like to hear opinions on my community tank stocking. Whether I've got capacity, and if so, ideas on what to put in? 33g, 125 litres Juwel filtration (don't know the precise power but the same as comes with the 63g model) Planted Amm 0 nitr 0 nitr 5-10 Ph 7.5 Hardness - don't...

    Help!! Tiny live white specs!!!

I've got snails breeding in a tank and for a few days they're just white blobs. The shells only become noticeable later.

    Help!! Tiny live white specs!!!

Planaria or nematodes or if they are not very long compared to width they could be very young snails? I don't think I'd worry about the first two unless breeding cos I understand planaria to take fish eggs and shrimplets. Snails can be a problem with plants but assassin snails have been a good...

    Plant life

Probably late in the post for this but seachem excel destroyed my vals. They just melted. All my plants in my 38g grow fine, if slowly in some cases, except for lilleaopsis braziliensis which has been choked by some hair algae after I fertilised. I have about 2 wpg.

    Snails

I got 2 assassin snails and they were so effective I now have to feed them. They haven't touched my nerite though - too big. I suspect you're apple snails will also be too big.

    bringing out the color!!!

In my lfs they use angled top lighting which then kind of reflects within the tank to give some side lighting. I think you'll need some top lighting too. I've not kept them myself, and I've not sorted my own lighting issues, but I did read that they look good with some side lighting.

    bringing out the color!!!

I've read that side rather than top lighting helps to show off their colours?

How big is your weekly water change?

    I do 15 - 20% weekly-ish. I've a lightly stocked heavily planted tank with reasonable filtration.

How safe is shop bought live food?

Thank you both for taking the time to reply in such detail. I had not considered the increase in aggression but as you say probably don't need to worry about that with small community fish. I plan to use them as part of the fish diet as well as flake, shrimp pellets and veggies (there are Otos...

New tank - How to cycle quickly?

Hi j12bon, glad to hear your fish have a new home and the water test is good. There's a website called aqadvisor which will give you a guide as to whether you're overstocking or not. 2 points - mollies are really brackish water fish. They can tolerate fresh but I have read that they are more...

How safe is shop bought live food?

I've been reading up on live foods for my small community freshwater tank - glowlight and neon tetras essentially. Everywhere says how good it is to feed them daphnia, bloodworms, blood shrimps etc, but every website also adds the warning that they can introduce disease. I'm in the process of...

    Wy Renegade's 20L Bog Tank

Just stumbled on this thread and read it all. Good job WR. Very interesting to see it develop season by season. Do you feed anything other than the fish? It's been said before but lucky students.

    Planted shrimp tank

I would keep an eye on water quality if you're squishing a lot of pest snails. I tried the squish technique but in the end resorted to 2 assassin snails which have been very effective. I haven't seen any "naughty snails" ( as my 3 yr old calls them) for 2 months, but see the occasional new...

    glowlight tetra lighting

I have a 38L planted with nearly 2 wpg. stocking includes 8 glowlight tetras. they look more washed out than i would like and i'm planning on adding some extra dimmer light to have on at the end of the photo period so i can enjoy the glowlights more fully. does anyone know if blue "moonlight"...

My tank was covered in brown algae. Couldn't see the green leaves. Put in 5 Otocinclus and the tank was clean a day later.

    "Ahhhhhhh- glass chips" advice

Thanks for all the advice. They are shallow scratches. I interrogated the culprit and they were made with the pointy end of knitting needles. I'll try the toothpaste +/- 220 volts! I am not worried that the glass is weakened, just blemished.

    "Ahhhhhhh- glass chips" advice

i have a 38g freshwater set up, running for 2-3 months, cycled, planted and partially stocked. it's my pride and joy. i came home from work yesterday and to my horror found about 8 thin very shallow chips in the front pane. i can only assume my 3 yr old daughter has been giving it a good whack...
