I've got snails breeding in a tank and for a few days they're just white blobs. The shells only become noticeable later.

Planaria or nematodes or if they are not very long compared to width they could be very young snails? I don't think I'd worry about the first two unless breeding cos I understand planaria to take fish eggs and shrimplets. Snails can be a problem with plants but assassin snails have been a good...

Probably late in the post for this but seachem excel destroyed my vals. They just melted. All my plants in my 38g grow fine, if slowly in some cases, except for lilleaopsis braziliensis which has been choked by some hair algae after I fertilised. I have about 2 wpg.

I got 2 assassin snails and they were so effective I now have to feed them. They haven't touched my nerite though - too big. I suspect you're apple snails will also be too big.

In my lfs they use angled top lighting which then kind of reflects within the tank to give some side lighting. I think you'll need some top lighting too. I've not kept them myself, and I've not sorted my own lighting issues, but I did read that they look good with some side lighting.

I've read that side rather than top lighting helps to show off their colours?

I do 15 - 20% weekly-ish. I've a lightly stocked heavily planted tank with reasonable filtration.

I would keep an eye on water quality if you're squishing a lot of pest snails. I tried the squish technique but in the end resorted to 2 assassin snails which have been very effective. I haven't seen any "naughty snails" ( as my 3 yr old calls them) for 2 months, but see the occasional new...

My Amanos take my tetras bloodworms so they don't just eat algae

Thanks for all the advice. They are shallow scratches. I interrogated the culprit and they were made with the pointy end of knitting needles. I'll try the toothpaste +/- 220 volts! I am not worried that the glass is weakened, just blemished.
