    Anyone else go filter-free?

Oh I forgot to mention I just started reading the Ecology Of A Planted Tank by Walsted, wish I would have done this years ago when I started.

    Anyone else go filter-free?

I switched my 75gal., 29gal., and 20gal to no filters, just heavily planted, I love the natural tanks. I have a hob filter on my 5gal betta only because it's growing pothos and bamboo out of the filter and tank.

    Diy co2 help!

I do 2 cups of sugar, 1 tsp or packet of yeast. I think it's a tsp of baking soda but not sure. There are many sites that give you the exact amount. Youtube has a lot of video's, check it out and good luck.

    Lighting advice? 50g?

Try Lowes, that's where I got 6500k cfl bulbs and use a clamp on shop light. As long as its full spectrum. I don't think they have them at Home depot, at least I haven't seen them there. I have used them on my 29gal and still on my 20 gal. You can either clamp them on the rim or lay them on...

    flourite or eco???

I use both in my dirted tanks, depends on do you want to rinse the florite or just put the eco complete in. I used florite on top of the dirt because it had a higher iron content, then I capped that with black ecco complete. I think as long as your using dirt it just depends on what you like.

    Dumb question

I have three live plant tanks, one is a 75 gallon. My substrate is organic dirt capped with ecco complete or small gravel. Don't push the vacuum tube into the gravel, just hover it over to suck up the waste and left over food, etc. As far as what kind of plants, you need to get proper lights...

    Betta advise (newbie here )

In my betta tank I have plant substrate with a sword, but you can float plants. I have some wisteria floating, he likes to sleep near the surface. I'm not sure about planting in gravel, I know some people do but depending on what plants you get. I think it would be better if you replaced the...

    Dirted tank

I switched all my tanks to organic dirt and I would never go back. Not only is it cheaper, I believe it's actually better for the plants. My plants love it. My 75 gal and 29 gal are capped with fluorite or ecco complete, my 20 gal and 5 gal are capped with pea gravel. Before I started using...

    Light Question

Just trying to find out what level of lighting I have. I was having a problem with blue green algae but have seemed to correct this with many water changes and cleaning the substrate gently. I'm considering led lighting but have not made a decision yet. I may try one on my 29 gallon planted...

    75 gal planted tank advice

By loading it up with plants, that will help the ammonia level. Plants love ammonia.

    75 gal planted tank advice

Yes, after you get the dirt soaked, cap it. When you fill it up try not to disturb the capping as this will stir up dirt. Use a saucer or plate by placing it on the capping and running the water on the plate. It will could up, I would fill it up, wait 1 day and then drain and fill. You may...

    Light Question

On my 75 gallon tank I have a 2 bulb t8 shop light 65k bulbs from Home Depot and a 2 bulb t5ho light with 65k bulbs. Is this considered medium lighting. The fixtures are sitting on a diy canopy 4 inches above the top.

    75 gal planted tank advice

When you put it in the tank, make sure all the small twigs are removed and crumble up any dirt clumps. Then soak the dirt and mix it around making sure it's completely soaked. Level it out before you cap it. You will have to drain and fill it probably three times or until it's as clear as you...

    Lighting question

If you want to keep it inexpensive and low light, check out home depot or lowes and get a t8 65k, they have cheap fixtures with decent reflectors, I would get a 2 bulb fixture if it's a 60gallon tank.

    75 gal planted tank advice

I don't use CO2 in these tanks, I have used DIY CO2 in the past. The lights I have now I don't think are in the high range. As far as how much dirt, my tanks have at least 1 inch of dirt with 1.5 to 2 inches of cap. Check out Dustin's You Tube videos or check out Aquatic Jungles, he has so...

Just the beginning of a planted tank! What do you think?

The nice thing about tall tanks is you can load it up with plants like jungle val, aponegetin, not sure if it's spelled right, it's the bovinis one I think. It grows fast and tall. I think you need a better light, looks like a stock light. Maybe look into a t5ho fixture or check out the leds...

    75 gal planted tank advice

The dirted tank will cloud up, but with a few water changes that takes care of it. Also when you move plants around you will stir up some cloudiness but it settles down. On my 75 gal I have two fixtures, both 48 inch, one is a two bulb t8 65k home depot fixture and bulbs and the other is a two...
