How do I trim my java moss?

My java moss lawn is like 3 to 4 inches tall now, I want to give it a trim but there's about 300 red cherry shrimp living in it and I don't want to decapitate any of them. I tried to scare them off with my hand, but they don't move out of the way.

Plants dying after switching to black beauty sand.

I think my black beauty "sand" (iron slags) are too fine and there isn't any oxygen or nutrients (fish poop) getting to the roots of the plants (my cabomba plants are getting soft and snapping, my swords are turning yellow, a few more plants are slowly dying as well). My floating plants and moss...

    Diving oxygen cylinder for CO2?

My brother just upgraded his oxygen cylinder for diving, so he has a spare one lying around. This thing is huge compared to most CO2 cylinders for aquariums, I was wondering if I could fill it up with CO2 and integrate that into my setup? Has anyone ever done something like that?

    Meet my new bamboo shrimp.

Prometheus and Pontius Pilate. I named them after characters in the Greek and Bible mythology  They're huge! Over 3 inches long. They're by far the biggest thing in my tank. Even my betta who acts like he's the king of the tank (he oversees the tank from his throne, my floating plants in...

Does anyone use a pre-filter for their canister?

Are there any pre-filters for canister filters? I was thinking about DIY-ing one and putting it on top of the tank, where I can place all my sponges to do most of the mechanical filtration, that way I wouldn't have to make a mess from cleaning out my canisters all the time.

Tying java fern. Never doing it again.

I bought some Windelov java fern today and was planning to tie them to my bogwood (doing it for the first time), when I got home I remember a lot of my shrimps like to hide inside my bogwood. I gave it a few shakes, a few shrimps stuck their heads out to see what was going on and went back...

What should I put in my 10 gallon non planted?

I bought four golden mystery snails for my main planted display tank but they started gnawing on my plants, I tried to find them a new home but no one would take them. So I just bought a 10 gallon tank just for them, but having four snails in a tank is kinda boring. I thought about putting...

Is a 200w heater good enough for my 30 gallon?

During the winter months, the temperature here gets as low as 60f at night. I plan to keep my water temperature at around 80f. So that's a whopping 20 degrees my heater has to heat up for 30 gallons of water. I bought a 200w heater the other day, haven't had a chance to test it yet because right...

What is this flat slug/worm thing in my aquarium?

I came home tonight, turned the light on and saw it on the glass. It doesn't crawl, but stretches out pretty long and then pulls its body up to move. It's about an inch long when it stretches out. It's not planaria as it doesn't have the squid shaped head and it moves about...

Something is killing my bladder snails.

I was hoping to get a colony of bladder snails going but I keep finding these empty snail shells in my tank for some reason. It's kinda upsetting, because they're one of the first occupants of my tank (one of them hitchhiked from the plants I purchased when I was doing my fishless cycle a couple...

    Street lamp for aquarium?

I just found out that I can get my friend to order me a 120W led street lamp through the company where he works for a little less than $300. I'm looking to upgrade to a 100 gallon planted tank later this year and thought the lamp might be a good investment, so I'm looking into it. Do you think...

    Blackwater question.

I've been adding Indian Almond leaves and its extracts to my aquarium, I love the look and my fish seem more active with them, but my tank is well planted so I'm planning on getting brighter lights to counterbalance the blackwater effect. So now it raises the question, visually is there a...

Does anyone know what this is?

I went and bought a betta and the lady at the store gave me a square foot of this for free. I asked for the name but forgot what it is, it's not baby dwarf tears but something else. Thanks in advance.

Can I keep a betta in my community tank?

Hi, I was wondering if I can keep my betta with my neon tetras, glofish, albino cory cats and cherry shrimps? I went on aqadvisor and it would have compatibility issues. I did a bit of research on google, and everyone says it's okay. So I'm confused. Thanks.

    Neon tetras fighting?

I have a school of 7 neon tetras, I've had them for about two months and they have been really peaceful, but lately they've been fighting each other when they're bored. Did they learn this behavior from my glofish? They've never fought before until they saw my glofish doing it. I have a well...

    Top level swimming center piece?

Hi, I have a 30 gallon tank that houses the following fish: 8 glofish 7 neon tetras 6 albino cory cats 1 dwarf gourami The DG was supposed to be my center piece but it likes to swim between my plants and graze the bottom for food, it rarely swims up top anymore even though I got some floating...

10% daily vs 30% weekly water change

Which one is better for the fish? I'd imagine smaller water changes would cause less ph fluctuation thus shocking the fish less. But since I'm using the python method, I'm afraid I might be dosing the tank with too much prime as it accumulates over time. I thought about using less prime (enough...

What kind of fish is this?

So I got sent to Hong Kong on a four year job assignment last year, I've settled in pretty well and am glad to find out that all the fish are VERY cheap here and the variety of fish available is quite astounding. Anyway, I went to the fish street today (yeah, not a fish store but a fish street...

What to do about this big empty space?

It's a 30 gallon tank (25" x 15" x 19") I knew I should've bought a wider, shorter tank. I don't know what to do with all that vertical space. My tank is ugly, help me fill that upper space around the top left corner please. Thanks.

    Are albino cories bottom dwellers?

I got six of them today and they've been chasing each other non stop all over the place. They're even more hyperactive than my glofish danios. This is not what I expected. I had everything planned out too, a couple of Dwarf Gouramis would swim gracefully near the top of the tank, the glofish and...

Dwarf Gourami acting like a jerk.

So I went to and got some fish for my newly cycled 30G tank today and thought I'd get a pair of Dwarf Gouramis. I wanted to get a male and a female but for some particular reason, they only sold pairs of males so I got a pair for $1.50 (I also got 8 neon tetras for $1.50). So I drip...

Should I stop pumping oxygen in my tank?

Are oxygen and Co2 the only two dissolved gases in water? The reason I'm asking is, I'm planning to add pressurized Co2 to my tank but I also have an air pump running. So if oxygen and Co2 content in water always are relative (like 60/40, 50/50, 50/60, etc.), then it would be counter intuitive...

DIY 90 CFM aquarium fan for around $10.

It's getting pretty hot around here and my tank that's being fishless cycled had reached close to 90F, so I thought I'd find a cheap way to cool it down before I add my fish. I've looked at some aquarium fans, but they all have pretty low airflow, even the ones with four 8 cm fans only produce a...

Need a bottom dweller or two.

What's a small bottom dweller that I can get for my 30G tank? Because of the lack of space, my tank is custom made to be taller/deeper, so it probably only has the ground surface area of a 20G tank (27" x 16" x 18"). So yeah, my 30G is sorta only comparable to a 20G tank when it comes to space...
