I think you are going to want a filter even if it is just something smaller and cheap. That way when you are quarantining you can take some filter media out of your main tank and put it in the QT tanks filter. Or you can use the extra filter in your main tank and then when you want to use the QT...

If you are replacing the filter media every month you are basically going to go through a new cycle each month. Just rinse the used media in old tank water after a water change and you are good to go.
