    Freshwater, Seeking Questions & Advice

First off how long has this tank been running? Some algae blooms are perfectly natural in a cycling system. If you are sure it is completely cycled then it would be your lighting. Thats a current freshwater led so it has the juice to grow algae when its left on too long. Cut the light down to...

El Cheapo Refugium Build! WITNESS ME!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I've been really busy lately so I haven't been able to get back on here to update. So I wanted everyone to know that everything is up and running fine. The overflow is working properly too, I just covered the connections with leftover silicone I had lying...

El Cheapo Refugium Build! WITNESS ME!!!

Alrighty, I've put together the proto overflow now, I just eyeballed some 1/2 inch pipes and fitted them with leftover tees! I also made the inlet out of the plastic syphon portion. Let's hope this works! Testing phase is next!

El Cheapo Refugium Build! WITNESS ME!!!

I plan on making a DIY overflow, I was going to tackle that next. I want to assemble it with 1/2" clear airline tubing instead of pvc piping. I haven't seen it done yet so I am going to find out soon enough! I want it to be unobtrusive.

El Cheapo Refugium Build! WITNESS ME!!!

Yeah, I love the narrow leaf kind! It doesn't fall apart as easily as the regular I've noticed. It's competed very well with the hornwort and riccia.

El Cheapo Refugium Build! WITNESS ME!!!

Yeah, I've thought about it too, if this size pump is too weak I have a small pond pump kicking around I could use instead. But I would like to keep a light flow because I have a rose petal rescue betta that has a hard time getting around.

El Cheapo Refugium Build! WITNESS ME!!!

Good question Brookster, part of the reason I want to add a refugium is because of my over growing plants, I have narrow leaf anachris and Java moss coming out of my ears, I don't like to trash extra plants so I generally give them away. I don't like the way my display looks like a jungle in the...

El Cheapo Refugium Build! WITNESS ME!!!

Now I already have the pieces for my filter portion ready, So I'll tell you how I'm putting it together. I'm putting my pump inside the glass lampshade packed in by a bunch of filter media, with the outlet tube going through the small hole in the top. I cut the airline tube about an inch past...

El Cheapo Refugium Build! WITNESS ME!!!

Hi Everyone! I am going to put together an EXTREMELY cheap refugium for a 20 gallon long, heavily planted, freshwater setup. I am doing so with found items and other used equipment picked up at a Re-use center. I have everything I need (I think...) to assemble it at a value of ~$35! :brows: So...

    Your favorite fish!

Ooh, I've heard a lot about elephant fish Shelly, I bet he's really fun! And Bettaowner, are you breeding? I love convicts they're very pretty, but are they hard to keep?

    Your favorite fish!

So I have a favorite neon tetra in my tank, I saved him from an anchor worm near his gill plate by taking him out and *carefully* squishing the worm , which died :) I didn't think he would live and multiple people told me to just kill him, but he's perfectly fine now! Hence my favorite fish...

    Lowtech lighting question?

Yes, the new ones are a darker shade and are matching, they are also pointier, think aloe Vera type points, while the adult leaves are more lobed and are on longer stems. I'll try to attach a pic this afternoon, also am not using liquid ferts, I had heard that it would be unnecessary for low...

    Lowtech lighting question?

Yeah I have plenty of growth on my amazon sword, it has grown about four new leaves in just two weeks and the root system has grown a lot faster than I would have thought :). On two of the new leaves are a tiger-like striping, do you have any idea if that is normal? They are bright green and...

    Lowtech lighting question?

Thank you so much! I was starting to get worried because I have been researching too much lol, I just want to enjoy a lowlight setup before I get into anything more delicate, and I thought this light would be great when I got it because it looked really bright, but them I found out about...

    Lowtech lighting question?

Hello all! First of all I am trying to get into planted tanks, I have a 20 long and have a t8 17 watt full spectrum bulb . I have gotten java moss, amazon sword, anacharis and creeping Jenny. I just want to know if my full spectrum light will be enough in the long run or if I should get a better...

Plan of Attack - Bumblebee Gobies

I have kept them and they really are something! My plan of action would be to ask the store for the breeder's info, then you could really know what specie. If you get that many it's possible that they are mixed together and you can hardly tell the breeds apart. Good luck finding out!

    Unwanted Pest or Helpful Friend

Just make sure to crush them, in most places aquarium snails are illegal to dump in the local waterways or ponds.
