    algae bloom

I guess I'll be visiting Mr. Watson again here shortly... This time purchasing the fertilizing agents independently. Not sure why he sells the pre-mix when it seems like a better play to dose each fert separately. I guess because people like me buy it :?

    algae bloom

Is insufficient firterlization one possible reason for the outbreak of an algae bloom (green water)? The reason I ask is because it sorta seems like if there is a lack of nutrients, well the algae wouldn't have nutrients either.... but maybe algae doesn't need as many as the plants??

I turned down the CO2 and everything is fine. Guess I just got a little too excited. Thanks for the replies.

    PH + CO2

so... I'm going to slow my CO2 rate and increase my KH buffer. What is your preferred method of increasing KH?

    PH + CO2

Unfortunately no, I don't have a PH controller. This is my 38 gallon (which I like to call 40) tank. I can't say for sure the number of bubbles per second. Maybe 7 - 12 bubs/sec. I wasn't sure what to go for so I just guessed. Is the 7 deg KH low then?

    PH + CO2

Last night I turned on my pressurized CO2 system for the first time and within an hour I had almost killed my Kribs. It turned out that I had a drastic drop in PH. From 7.2 to less then 6.0 (I don't have a test that goes below 6.0 but after 50% water change and the rest of my PH stabilizer...

    How?

czcz... what's the problem with the white cloudy water? I had some white cloudy water for a week or more and then it just went away. I just kept my regular water changes and that's all... but what was making the white cloudy water? I forget.

    CO2 Supplies

Haha... yeah I was starting to think something like that might be the case. You guys were right it turned out. I googled welding supply company and found a place called AirGases that didn't seem surprised when I called about CO2 tanks. For a 10 lb tank refill it costs $16. Good price?

    CO2 Supplies

I'm sure these questions have been asked before, but I couldn't find them on the search.... 1.) Where do you go to fill empty CO2 bottles? 2.) Where can you find T connectors and tubing for CO2? I can honestly say that I've never run into these products and services in my day-to-day life...

Vacation and my poor planted tank

I did C when I went to Japan for two weeks. My plants hurt bad. It took me awhile to get the plants healthy again. Also, I grew a new kind of algae I hadn't seen before that is still hanging around. But... at least as a worst case scenario it's not so bad. Your plants won't completely...

    Heating DIY CO2

Interesting mix Z. I have never seen that before. My apartment is usually 72 degrees so I guess that's not affecting it. I'll check the type of yeast. I'm guessing the quick rise yeast would have a higher metabolism and build up the alcohol level or use up the sugar fast? I didn't think to...

    Heating DIY CO2

My DIY CO2 output goes down significantly 5-7 days after making it... so I'm having to replace it about once a week. It seems like people usually say their CO2 lasts about 2 weeks. I know I can reduce the amount of yeast I'm using to make the CO2 output last longer but I'm using a pretty...

    Filter for small planted tank.

It does look like a great solution. Thanks for the tip guys.

    Filter for small planted tank.

I am going to plant my 10 gallon and I've been wanting to get a new filter for awhile now. Right now I have a mini hang on back regular filter. It seems like a canister would be overkill on a 10 gallon and I think I don't want a bio-wheel since that would release carbon dioxide from the tank...

    Floating Riccia

So I just got my CO2 setup for my 10 gallon in the mail but I'm headed out of town next week and I'm having my girlfriend look after my tanks for a few weeks... Anyway... I've never grown Riccia before so I want to be around when I plant it, add CO2, etc... so I can monitor and trouble...

    Riccia Light Requirement

I'm adding CO2 to my 10 gal tank and I am wanting to grow riccia in it. Do you guys think that a 15 w 65000 k regular output fluorescent will be enough light?

    Film on top of water

Well changing the angle of the outflow and putting it a bit more towards the surface got rid of the film. I guess it was just collecting junk on top. Thanks Meredith. I had to turn down the flow from my canister a bit because of my floating plants, but I think that's ok. Better not to have...

    Film on top of water

It's a thick film. When I blow across the surface, the water will "bend" and when I stop blowing the surface returns to the original starting position, so I have no surface movement. I'll try getting some more surface movement from my filter tonight in case I'm experiencing something similar...

    Film on top of water

I recently did these things to my aquarium: 1. Open Top with Coralife 2x65w lights. 2. CO2. 3. Canister filter (Fluval 304) from HOB. 4. Planted. Now I have this weird film stuff on top of my water that is bugging me (and my butterfly fish). I know some people might say that its the water...

    DIY CO2

I can't imagine taking out my DIY CO2 2-liter bottle and guzzling that down 8O I just meant that it was good for everyone that yeast behaves the way it does. I too would be interested in the results of CO2 experimenting... and, I too will not be doing the work.

    DIY CO2

So the reason a large initial concentration of yeast will have the CO2 taper off to almost nothing is because there isn't initially any alcohol but there is plenty of yeast to consume the sugar, so a lot of alcohol is initially produced and then only a small amount of yeast will reproduce future...

    DIY CO2

So my understanding of this process is that the yeast consumes the sugar and CO2 is released as a byproduct. My question is this: How does changing the amount of yeast affect the rate of CO2 produced? If thats a stupid question, sorry, but my thinking is that since the yeast multiplies and...
