    Slight Ammonia level

Does it always have to be 0 for an ammonia reading? When I test my water, it's always hard to tell if the API test is coming uo 0 or .25. The shading is hard to read. If it's .25 is that harmful for the fish?

    Ph testing question

I have the API Testing kit. Do you run the low PH & high PH tests together. The bottles don't say "bottle #1 & bottle #2" so I'm thinking you don't use both bottles together. If the color doesn't match anything on the chart with one does that mean the other one is the true reading of PH?

    Cooler Lights?

I have a 5 gallon marineland Hex tank. The bulb in it is only a 15 watt compact fluorescent. It gets pretty hot and heats up the water. Is there any kind of bulb that runs cooler. My bulb seems to heat up the tank to 83 degrees after 8 hours with no heater on.

4th Day Fishless cycle -Ammonia 8.0+

I started the fishless cycle 4 days ago in a 5 gallon tank with plants. I didn't have my test kit till today. I was putting in only maybe a small capful of ammonia everyday. I got my test kit today (API) and the ammonia reading was 8.0 or abouve (it was at the top green on the chart). I did a...

    Temperature control

I have a new 5 gallon hex tank which I'm cycling before i add fish. I have plants in there so I am running the light on it for about 8 hours a day to keep the plants healthy. But I find running the lights raises the temperature to about 81-82 degrees. Obviously I don't even run the heater right...

Taking out plants to clean tank

I have a question. I have a 5 gallon hex tank. It's pretty small. With the few decorations and plants I have it will be pretty hard to vacuum the gravel when I need to. Can I take out the live plants and put them back in after cleaning the gravel without hurting them?
