I don't think Melafix will help with ammonia poisoning. Get a water conditioner like Amquel which detoxifies ammonia while supposedly allowing the cycle to continue. Good luck, hope your mum's betta is feeling better soon.

You also need some kind of cover in case the betta decides to jump.

I used plain black paper, but I've heard of other fishkeepers using black garbage bags, which has the advantage of not being damaged by water.

Have you tested ammonia, nitrite, etc? My betta also lost a large chunk of his tail during the cycle. It eventually grew back--for some reason, the new growth is a brighter red than the old. Give him good quality water and food, and try antibiotics (but I'm not sure if they're available...

Have you tested your tap water (if that's what you're using)? My tapwater contains varying amounts of ammonia and nitrite, that could be a factor for you too. Some water conditioners like Amquel+ and Prime remove ammonia for you.

I've read that feeding daphnia occasionally can help prevent constipation too. I hope she's feeling better soon. One of my bettas recently had constipation, and he seemed so miserable, I was so worried about him. But now he is acting like his old frisky self.

I stopped eating fish (and other animals) more than 10 years before I started keeping fish, but I find that now that I know some fish personally I find it more disturbing to see people eating fish that still have the heads on.

Even if you are breeding them on purpose, they don't live together all the time, and afterwards the female often needs to go into a hospital tank. Breeding bettas is a huge responsibility, are you really ready for the hundreds of babies, tanks set up, a plan to find homes for them, etc.?

You shouldn't have the male and female betta in the same tank, unless there is a divider.
