Cloudy water, worried stuff from CO2 system got in?

Thanks, malkore. I had done a 50% water change yesterday but today the pH was even worse (5.5! :() and there is a vinegary smell in the tank so I'm sure that you're right about the mixture getting into the tank. (And, the bottle had fallen over.) I did a 90% water change as you suggested and I...

    Bettas dying

I'm sorry about your loss. I agree is Zagz, a couple of days of not eating after a move is not unusual. Do you have test kits? (pH, ammonia, nitrite)? What is the temperature?

    funny story

I've read you shouldn't use seashells in a FW tank.

    Cycling Betta Tank

I don't think Melafix will help with ammonia poisoning. Get a water conditioner like Amquel which detoxifies ammonia while supposedly allowing the cycle to continue. Good luck, hope your mum's betta is feeling better soon.

    Newly Set Up Betta Tank {pics}

You also need some kind of cover in case the betta decides to jump.

    I've got my first fish.

Congratulations on your new fish. How big is your tank, and how many fish do you have?

    Backgrounds

I used plain black paper, but I've heard of other fishkeepers using black garbage bags, which has the advantage of not being damaged by water.

    Fighting fish with missing tail

Have you tested ammonia, nitrite, etc? My betta also lost a large chunk of his tail during the cycle. It eventually grew back--for some reason, the new growth is a brighter red than the old. Give him good quality water and food, and try antibiotics (but I'm not sure if they're available...

    does anyone like painted tetras?

I don't think that one should support this cruel practice financially. I would be willing to take in a dyed fish in need, but I wouldn't pay money for it. See http://deathbydyeing.org/ for more info.

    white poop

Are you sure it is poop and not something else? (bits of skin, worms, ???) What do you have in the tank?

How long to get rid of popeye?

Thank you for your detailed reply. When I said the pH was 7-7.5, I meant it is somewhere between those two readings. It doesn't fluctuate that much. The filter is a HOB with the white fluffy media (sorry, forget the term). Last night I put plastic canvas around it to reduce the current. I'll...

How long to get rid of popeye?

My betta has had popeye for some time (I wasn't sure if he had popeye until I got another betta and compared them). I gave him a full course of Maracyn 2--it had no effect. Now I'm trying Ampicillex. When I hit on the right treatment, how long will it take to see a change in his eyes? If the...

    Ammonia problem

Have you tested your tap water (if that's what you're using)? My tapwater contains varying amounts of ammonia and nitrite, that could be a factor for you too. Some water conditioners like Amquel+ and Prime remove ammonia for you.

    lethargic betta

I've read that feeding daphnia occasionally can help prevent constipation too. I hope she's feeling better soon. One of my bettas recently had constipation, and he seemed so miserable, I was so worried about him. But now he is acting like his old frisky self.

    seafood??

I stopped eating fish (and other animals) more than 10 years before I started keeping fish, but I find that now that I know some fish personally I find it more disturbing to see people eating fish that still have the heads on.

    Lumpy betta--very worried

Even if you are breeding them on purpose, they don't live together all the time, and afterwards the female often needs to go into a hospital tank. Breeding bettas is a huge responsibility, are you really ready for the hundreds of babies, tanks set up, a plan to find homes for them, etc.?

    Lumpy betta--very worried

You shouldn't have the male and female betta in the same tank, unless there is a divider.
