There is a possibility you can have a mix of two. Firemouths, for instance, are relatively small as are acaras. Either an acara/firemouth mix or a firemouth/severum mix could work. Remember, you can use rocks and other formations to create territories and keep the peace.

I doubt it. Keeping one of each is a bit cruel. The fish will feel threatened because they lack companions. Remember, only keeping 1 ram is bad enough because it is a pair fish. When you're dealing with harem fish like some apistos, you have to think of them like neons or other schooling fish...
