    Coating outside items

We also tried boiling the rocks and retesting and still tested with ammonia levels.

    Coating outside items

The gems are there naturally. I was told by the person who gave it to me that it is quartz and that he has no issues with them in his own tank but my fiancé and I placed one rock in a bucket of water that tested with no ammonia and within 3 hours the ammonia was at a .5 level when retested.

    My new find

I have seen those before and they are pretty for sure! I have recently become obsessed with Hillstream Loaches or Butterfly Plecos. Have you seen any of those? Their only downfall is they are hard to keep and they stay very small.

What Made You Want A Freshwater Aquarium?

Honestly, because I was too afraid to attempt a salt water haha. I got my first tank all of my own in the 9th grade for Christmas. At that age I was far to scared to attempt a salt water and also couldn't afford it on a high schoolers McDonalds budget. I am now 26 and have been breading Fancy...

    Coating outside items

I received as a gift real lava rock with quartz gems in them. I LOVE this beautiful and rare gift but it is causing ammonia levels. Is there a way to coat these rocks so they are safe for my tank like clear marine Epoxy?

    Fancy Guppy Moms

Oh wow. I have actually never had any get crushed thankfully. That is awful.

    Transparent Knife F

I cant remember the exact number off the top of my head but they said it wasn't that bad. It was the only thing off in the tank at all. I am doing a 20% water change now as suggested by the pet store. My balas are still babies right now. I know how big they get and plan to upgrade my tank...

    Transparent Knife F

I have a 60 gal with three balas, a high fin pleco, and fancy guppies. I just had the water tested again and its great. My ph is 7. The fish store employee said he has never seen that in 8 years. There is no amonia. The only thing bad was my nitrites are a bit high. I have to do a water change.

    Transparent Knife F

My Fiance picked this fish out. It was the only one he picked for our new tank. We both loved him very much and named him Slick. I read up on him and read that they often die within the first 30 days but are very hardy after that. Slick lasted 2 weeks. I have no idea why! My levels were good. Im...

    Fancy Guppy Moms

I agree about the stress so I do wait until they square off or stop eating to put them in and also add stress coat as well. I have had some do great with a breeder and some abort every time they get in so I really dont know if I like them or not. If I use them successfully I get tons of babies...

    Fancy Guppy Moms

I have a 1.8 gal for the babies, a 5 for the teens and a 60 for adults. I currently have two moms in the 5 gal and two in a 3 way breeder. I also have this nifty new hatchery that hangs on the outside of the tank that I am just in love with haha because I think its so cool to see my babies...

    Fresh to Salt

I have heard that the larger are easier because levels dont change as rapidly. Thank you for your advice.

    Fresh to Salt

Hello all, I have had fresh water tanks for years and have been successful with them. I love breeding fancy guppies and watching my plecos and Balas grow to great sizes but I am now interested in moving on to trying my hand at salt water. What size tank would you recommend for a first timer and...

    Big Mamma Guppy

You can tell if they are pregnant if they have a black gravid spot. These are located at the lower back part of their belly. In blonde (yellow) guppies this can be orange in color. They black color is actually baby eyes. They are pregnant on average for about 21 days. They can actually give...

    Help me again!

Twice weekly maybe too much of a water change too often. Try taking it down to once a week to let chemicals work. Treat your imbalances and let the tank straighten itself out. You will have to remove your filter pads while treating with certain chemicals as the carbon in them can suck your...

    Glass Knife Fish

I have a new Glass Knife fish. I got him a week ago. He is in a 60 gal tank with plenty of hiding places including rocks, a rock cave, and plenty of plants. He seems to be very happy. He is about 6-8 inches now. I have read that males can get 17.5 and females can get up to 8. I was wondering if...

    Strange behavior

Sometimes they will do this if there is not enough oxygen in the tank. Are the also nipping at the top like when they eat food? If so its an oxygen deficiency.

Ich…how to prevent and my new Loaches!

I think Balas should be considered in general as they are one of my favorite fresh water aquarium fish but I did mean as an ick indicator as well. I agree there are many reasons for them to rub their bodies but I have read articles about they way they rub their bodies can tell you if its to...

What Kind of Octopus Do I need?

Thank you all for the advice. Some of this I have read from Google but you all are much more helpful. I actually would not be doing this on my own, I will have help from those who have had salt for years but now I am wondering if that is even enough haha. I guess I will just have to keep...

What Kind of Octopus Do I need?

I had read that there are some fresh water Octopus. I was looking into the Carribbean and the dwarf. Are these good choices? I know the Caribbean needs a 70 gal tank and I have read about how to escape proof a tank. How many gallons does the dwarf need? I also read that you wont see them much at...

Ich…how to prevent and my new Loaches!

Bala Sharks are a good predictor of ICK. They will rub their bodies against the rocks before the outbreak warning you to handle the issue before the outbreak occurs. They are schooling fish and need a lot of room to swim but they are something to consider.
