How do you know the co2 is too high? Are you monitoring with a controller or using a drop checker? I would suggest turning the co2 down and having lots of water movement on the surface to adequately provide them with oxygen, just until they are healthier and you have no more losses.
I really don't think a drop of .6 over two days would kill them. Are you able to shut off the co2 at night? My tap water is at 8.2 for ph and I bring it down to 6.9 ph. But I use a ph monitor which never gets turned off, even during water changes.
That really sucks that they died. I know how expensive they can be.
