Although I have been keeping aquariums for about a quarter of a century I have come across a new one.
I have been given a complete 29 gallon tank setup by a friend moving to a smaller house and the tank has been stored for several years in his basement. When I saw it, it had about 4 inches of black water in the bottom which after drained revealed both cat waste and cigarette butts among other odds and ends.
I have cleaned the tank, gravel, plants and filter with tap water, replaced the media including carbon and bio media and the tank is now set up, running and the water is crystal clear.
I started to begin my fishless cycling but am a little worried about the toxins from the cigarettes.
Has my cleaning with water been sufficient or do I need to do something else?
