Why are they high in the first place? What size tank, what are you stocking? Normally overstock is what raises the ammonia. That followed with over feeding and lack of filtration.

I am not sure why. I have 29l with 5 guppies 3 glow light tetra 2 ghost tetra 2 Corys and 2 ottos. The levels have been fine but now slightly high

Sounds a little cramped for a 29L. A little bit of thise high levels could be taken care of with a water change. I personally added some hardy floating plants like hornwart to my aquarium and it helped me maintain my levels at zero. If I were you, I would just add a water change I between your normal cycle. My 80l gets a 25-50% change at least once a week.
