So I’ve always heard that raw prime works as an ammonia source but I was wondering if I could use something less messy? Has anyone used API quick start before? Any other recommendations to start a less messy cycle?

I have never heard of raw Prime to cycle with. There are few ways to cycle.

1. Ace Hardware Janitorial Strength Ammonia (This is very specific ammonia)
2. Dr Tim's Ammonia + Bacteria A Quick Guide to Fishless Cycling | DrTim's Aquatics
3. You could put a raw shrimp in a mesh bad or cut the foot off clean pantyhose

I am sure there are others someone may suggest.

Definitely Dr. Tims! It's the only one of the bacteria in a bottle that actually works. Coral has given you great advice! The specific ammonia needs to be pure with no dyes, perfumes or surfactants. Dyes and perfumes are easy to check for with your eyes and nose but for the surfactants just shake the bottle if it bubbles then it won't work.
is an ammonia calculator (at the bottom of the page), Then just use an oral syringe to measure the correct amount and you are all good!
