has anyone got a good method of cleaning the surface of. sand, iv got a gravel cleaner but it doesnt seem to want to suck up most of the mess

Use your hand to sweep all the waste to one end of the tank. Then start your siphon and use just the end of the hose holding it 1in or so above the waste or until it begins to pick it up. It will pick up a little sand but not much.

I have a python hose and put the end in a 5g bucket inside the bath tube that way it will catch the sand that gets sucked up.

One thing I saw someone do once seemed pretty clever: They stuck a tooth pick to the end of the siphon hose with a rubber band. The toothpick hung out about 2 inches from the end of the hose and stirred the sand up a little as they vacuumed. Seemed like a good idea.
