Are protein skimmers adequate for Fresh water Tanks?

If so is their a minimum tank size for which they are effective, will they deplete amonia too much and cause the (good bacteria to starve). Is there a particular set up for which they are most effective like brakish water or anything like that?

They don't work in FW.

Pretty much a waste of money on a freshwater aquarium. I've heard of a few rare circumstances where they might work, but you'd have so many other problems with the aquarium at that point, that a protein skimmer probably wouldn't help much.
