If you can turn off the airstones and drop your tank level to cascade your filter overflow water onto the surface of the tank and see if your bubble issue goes away.

Have you had experience with Gourami?

Yep over 30 years I've kept a variety of them and right now I keep two dwarf gourami's and a honey gourami. Haven't kept any of the larger species in a while but love the pearl gourami's.
