I ve set up a new aquarium abbot two month ago. Over the last couple of day s brown algae has appeared on one of the biggest rocks and appears to be spreading. Any ideas on the cause and how to get rid????
It is diatoms, happens in most new tanks. It is a microscopic organism that feeds on silicates. When the silicates are gone it will go. You should be able to wipe it off if you don't want to look at it.
Otos are excellent at cleaning up diatoms. One of the best creatures for the job. I have a group that has been rotated to multiple tanks for that purpose alone.
The nice thing about otos is that they don't typically jump on top of fish food like shrimp and plecos do, so they spend a lot of time actually eating the algae.
