So about a week or so ago I started noticing brown stuff growing on my plants and rock, algae maybe? I don't know what it is or how to get rid of it.. any advice would be great!

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that it's brown algae. Either get some ottos, snails or shrimp or the good ole' elbow grease. I have some as well, but the snail and shrimp I have take care of most of it and I get the rest!

It's most likely diatoms. They are not harmful to your fish, however, some people think they are butt ugly. If left alone, they will usually disappear on their own. If you try to hurry them along, they come back stronger than before. Diatoms are common in tanks less than a year old.

Probably diatoms. Time often will rid new tanks of it, but you can probably find articles galore on google. A clean-up crew is not usually the best way to completely rid the tank of any algae, but others may disagree.

Here some pics, they aren't that great..

Okay, so don't try and whipe it off or anything? Cause then it'll just come back stronger? Just let it run its course?

I have ~12 ghost shrimp, and ~6 snails, and its still there.

Sometimes, humans get too anal about keeping a tank crystal clear, when that's not at all a normal environment for fish. Keep in mind that fish love to nibble on micro-organisms and diatoms/algae. Lucky for my fish, I'm far from a neat freak.....
