Why do people use ceramic type diffusers when the simple tube style reactors seem to do a good enough (or better) job at completely dissolving CO2?

A similar device can be made by cannibalizing the clear gravel tube from a python water changer hose. People have also made reactors using Dupont style whole house filters such as these:

Another big advantage to this system is that you do not need to clean it every 3 weeks like an in-tank ceramic diffuser. Any thoughts?
