Hey guys what are your thoughts on calcium reactors and uv lights

Do you have a tank with a lot of sps colonies and you're struggling to keep calcium up even with dosing? IMO uv is a fw thing, not sw

Both are unnecessary expenses. Calcium reactors are easily replaced by dosing pumps, and much cheaper. Uv sterilizers don't do much useful filtration due to size limitations. They have to be big and have most of the water in the system go through it to be helpful.

I don't use either, been running SPS mixed reef successfully for over 20 years without it. UV sterilizers have their place, but for most reefs they aren't very effective as they need a lot of maintenance. Calcium can be added in more simplistic ways than a reactor. Not to say they don't work, but I find a two part solution and a kalkwasser doser works equally well. And no C02 tank to mess with. Consistent water exchanges with a reef grade salt may be all you really need to do.
