I plan to use a phosban reactor for chemical filtration with chemi pure (which I've used for the past 4 years and has worked well), but I have been wondering if I could save a few bucks by mixing up my own combination of activated carbon and di resin. I think carbon and DI resin are the only two ingredients in Chemi Pure. Has anybody tried it?

I highly doubt DI resins are an ingredient in ChemiPure. It would be saturated with impurities and made useless in no time.

I don't know what's in it, but agree with ccCapt - it ain't DI resin. As he mentioned, DI resin would be depleted within hours, if not minutes. Plus, it would suck good things out of your tank - it's not picky about what it takes out of the water.
