Case of the mysterious vanishing clown loach

My clown loach disappears at night, only to reappear during the day. I have no clue where he goes.

I search all over the tank, even removing the hidey-houses, and no loach. Yet by day break, there he is again, swimming merrily, doing loop-de-loops.

The only thing I can think of is, maybe he's digging into the gravel?

??? Anyone?

Also, I was quite surprised when my blue dwarf gourami got excited during a feeding, swam up to the top and shot a stream of water at me. Trying to "knock the bug into the water." I didn't know they did that. Was very amusing.
