community fish advise

I have a 20 gallon tank that housed my 7+ year old ryukin that recently died. I would like to convert it to a tank of community fish. Is there anything special I have to do to prepare it? I was planning to do a water/filter change.
Any suggestions of fish that would be fun for kids to watch? I would like to have a large selection of fish if possible. How many can this size tank hold?

Do a water change but don't change the filter.

Well you have lots of options. What are you looking for specifically? A community tank?

I would wonder why the fish died before adding anything else?

Probably just old age. They usually live to around 10-15 but sometimes less.
