The basic concept for this tank is a FOWLR, shallow sand bed with a few reef inhabitants featuring total aerobic nitrate removal from a do it yourself adaptation of a large carbon bed with Bill Hiatt's right now bacteria, which you can continue to use, or not, either way the tank will continue to run and will not have to recycle if you take a large portion of the water.
