Sadly I don't have nearly enough space or the resources to build a pond but I really appreciate their beauty nonetheless. I remember reading something very neat recently. You guys no doubt know way more about this than I do and whether or not it's completely accurate but I still love this bit of fishkeeping history. I don't remember where I read it but there's a type of carp that's native to northeastern Asia called the black carp and centuries ago it was introduced to Japan from the mainland. Apparently it adapted extremely well to living in Japanese waterways and for a long time the people caught them for food. Eventually though some of these black carp, whether through mutations or recessive genes or something along those lines, started developing vibrant colors and people started selectively breeding them for these colors and to enhance them and this is where koi originated.
