Eheim Canister- already had but traded a $150 wet/dry filter for it
2 timers- $15

75 gallon:
Tank $99
Glass lids $40
T5 HO lights $65
Night time LEDs $35
Filters before FX5 (which all broke or became noisy): $100, Fluval FX5 $230

Fish were all trades except a few Silver Dollars.
Stand $140
APC Battery backup for powercuts/brownouts: $115

Really not that much... I also have a few things on my tanks (like battery backups, LEDs and big filters like FX5s) that aren't a requirement, just a nice to have.

60 gallon freshwater

Tank + stand = 250 on sale.
Filter = 140
Heater = 40
Python = 20
Decorations (incl driftwood) = 200
Fish = 500 or so.
Air pump/stones = 50

1200 dollars or so thus far. Depressing.

And yes, 500 dollars for fish. Discus, GBR's, Boesmani's, Sterbai cory cats and an expensive pleco.

I was looking at some interesting plecos last night, what do you have?

Some of them look truly awesome but I don't think I could bear to spend the prices they were asking... :(

Ours is a leopard cactus, also called a "red tail sternella", I believe. He's awesome but he hides almost 100 percent of the time. I can't wait for him to grow so he doesn't have such an easy time.

We wanted a golden nugget but they were even more expensive.

You spent 300.00 on a XP3?? I realize it's CDN dollars, but we spent 140 USD on that. Wow. Things really that much more expensive up there?? 70.00 for 70 pounds of sand?? 80.00 for a gravel vac??

Oh Yeah! We Canucks don't get off too easy when it comes to niche markets. My LFS is the only one in my area and they know it :) There are other pet stores around but they know nothing about fish really. So I have to go to the special store to get answers and reliable product :)

I would love to but the shipping costs put it to about the same anyways :) We canadians don't have any good resources for online aquaria and I don't really like using ebay or craiglist. Online was my first stop and for the things I wanted/needed it was too much to get it to me.

I honestly don't think about the price. I knew it wouldn't be cheap when I went to buy my first batch of stuff, but I'm thinking about is how my little fishy friends will be happy once the tank is ready for them.

In one day of craigslist heaven, I got:

55g tank, two 75 gallons, one pre drilled with overflow, and a 55g converted to a sump and two stands for a 75g!

Also gave me a 4 bulb 48" fixture for free and all 4 bulbs still worked!

All for free! This is of couse after a month or so of finding nothing all of a sudden BAM everyone posted a free tank lol.

I decided to setup the 55, use the light as my top, all I did was purchase:

Heater - 35$ 150w
Filter - $40 - Penguin 350 dual bio-wheel
Powerhead - $40

Chemicals, Food, Water Test Kit (liquid, not dipstick) and few random things expect about another $200

So it cost me about 300 ish even with free tanks!

I'll play:

5ft 100 gal (375 ltr) aquaone brand (aquagrande) aquarium, includes in hood wet/dry trickle filter, Plus stand: $1500 aus
3D rock back drop $250
Substrate: coral sand/crushed coral, $90
Awesome looking homemade rocks: $150
Chemicals, test kits, cichlid salts, food, etc etc etc $200-300.
3000 l/h power head for circulation, $120
14 cichlids (so far) $20 each.

Total $2690
Thats not including, buckets, hoses, grav vac, and various other gear I already had. Australia is expensive, don't care what spin you put in it lol. All worth it though.
