All in, my 8gal tank, internal filter, hood, light, gravel, stones, bogwood, plants, 12 fish, chemical test kits (NH3, NO2, NO3, pH), food and water change equipment came to about £90 (which is what, $180-$200?)

Well, since I'm setting up a new 75g, might as well...

AG Tank & Stand = $420.
AG Light Hood = $70 (got a great deal)
Fluval 404 Canister $98 (another great deal)
Estes Substrate = $70 (thank goodness for the above deals - xtra shipping charges)
Decorations = $32. (includes rocks, driftwood, etc)
2 300w heaters = $38 (gotta love those bargains)
Misc goodies = Priceless

Total (excluding plants, livestock) = $690.00

*Can someone recommend a good psychiatrist?

75 gal (bought on ebay)
Tank, glass hood, 40W light (yes I know it's not good enough for this size tank with plants), metal stand, 3 air pumps, a bubble wand, 2 air stones, driftwood attached with fake plant, 3 large rocks, 2 emperor 400's, 100 watt heater (I'm not even using this one in there, I'm using it in my 20 gal and have 2 150 watt's in the 75)
All for either $300 or $320 (don't remember which amount I paid).. Back then didn't realize it was such a good deal though. :)

I remember when I once bought my little brother a tank, gravel, & decorations for abou $50 for his birthday.... I didn't realize that it would cost him even more than that just to get the tank up and running... that was one gift that turned out to be a mistake!

Ok, this is only one example. I have 4 48" x12" x 12" (30 gal) tanks on 2 metal stands. Glass was free, but had to buy 3 tubes of silicone for abot $13.00, made stands from scrap at work, cost $0.00, 100 lbs gravel $0.00, 4 2 tube 4' moisture resistant fixtures $0.00. 2 Hagen 802 pumps bought at auction $10.00, box of ugf plates $2.00, bought at auction, assorted fish and plants $20.00, again bought at auction. I only have 1 tank that I bought brand new, and that is a 32 gal, bought in 1973 for $15.00. The rest are leakers, and a couple bought at auction with a few gifts thrown in. Most of my fish food is bought at auction, as are most of the fish and plants I have.Auctions aren't always the cheapest place to buy things, but occasionally, there are great deals to be had. Club auctions generally have dry goods donated by manufacturers, that can be had for less than retail. I wouldn't have as much stuff if I didn't belong to a fish club.

plants $15
fish $75
10 gal complete setup $20

the look on my mother face when i said i wanted more.... priceless. as hard as i try i can never turn down a good oppertunity to use that joke although i am sure i am not the first to use it in this forum
