Is there a right way or a wrong way to introduce "dead" base rock into an established aquarium? Thank your for any help

Make sure the dead base rock is clean and free of any harmful stuff such as chemicals, dirt, etc... If it is dead base rock meaning from a LFS holding tank, then no. Put it in and watch it come alive over time...

Wash it off really good. I wish i'd washed mine off more. The base rock i got was full of soot, dirt, and debris that clouded up the tank for days.

Clean it off and like Timbo said it will become live over time as you add live rock.
