Difference between iodine and iodide?

Is there a difference between iodine and iodide? Perhaps someone can clarify this for me?

First off, iodine is a trace element that should not be added without constant monitoring and testing. Most aqarium iodine addatives are actually potassium iodide, a much milder form of iodine. Kent makes a product call Lugol's solution that is much stronger then other addatives. It is a mix of iodine and potassium iodide. It should only used by experienced aquarists and is very easy to over-dose. The use of iodine in home tanks is a topic of some debate. While it MAY be helpful by promoting the molting process of some inverts and the sucess of some xenia species the research is scetchy at best. With regular water chages you should not need to dose any trace elements.
