Do I need a protein skimmer?

I really would like to do away with it, but how much better (honestly) is a PS rather than not having one?

Do some research on this site, there are literally hundreds of threads on this discussion already. It depends what you want to keep and what other equipment/rock you will have to decide if you NEED one or not. But yes, it is absolutely better to have one!

I personally believe that all saltwater tanks should have a skimmer system

As an aquarist, I am a firm believer that we keep water, the fish keep them selves. That being said, we should do all we can to ensure the best possible water quality that we can. A protien skimmer will certainly help usin this endevour.

Personally, i think you would need a skimmer if you're doing a reef system. Otherwise, a UV sterilizer alone with a good filter would work fine in a FOWLR system.JMO
