I have a 30 gallon tank and would like to get a pair of dwarf cichlids, but my lfs doesn't sell dwarf cichlids and cannot order them from their distributer. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could order some from? Any good or bad experiences with ordering? I don't like the idea of not being able to see the fish before purchasing them, but I don't really have a choice. Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Yes, but you need to be a little more specific about what kind of dwarf cichlids you are looking for.

There are quite a few species I like, but haven't picked the exact ones I want. A few of my favorites are:

Apistogramma baenschi

Apistogramma borellii

Apistogramma cacatuoides

Apistogramma hongsloi

Red Agassiz

Apistogramma rockpunkt

Any suggestions?

The problem with getting apistos from the wet spot is that they sell "unsexed pairs". This means you need to buy a bunch of fish to get a pair. Getting six is usually enough to get a pair but you never know. Sometimes you have bad luck.

Wouldn't this be a common issue? Don't most places ship very young fish?

Most of the places that specialize in south American fish can send you sexed pairs. I have bought apistos from 5-6 different sources and all have been able to provide pairs or trios.

With the places that are just buying them off their lists you generally need to buy 6.

I always recommend getting apistos from a specialist when you can because half the apistos imported as one thing turn out to be something else so unless you can see them in person you never know what you are getting.

There is a guy based out of oregon that sells on Aquabid that specializes is apistos, worth looking him up.

I've haven't had any issues getting exactly what I've ordered from Wetspot. If you ask for a pair they'll send you a pair. They might not be bonded but they will be a pair.

I agree with Dalto though, if you don't want to get 6-8 fish and grow them out buy a bonded or sexed adult pair from somewhere like Aqua clarity.

Thank you everyone for your advice! I really only have room for a pair because I'm hoping to keep their fry so I will be looking for a sexed pair!
