Filter media

Hey guys
Recently added seachem matrix into my filter in one of those little filter media bags, problem is that the bag actuall ends up polishing the water and it gets clogged. I was wondering if the seachem matrix actually has to be in the filter or can be left just hanging on the side of the tank?

Switch to a larger hole bag. The media does better in water flow.
