Have a ten gallon I want to get a few firebelly toads. Been googling and you tube searching. Watched a lot of 8 yr olds explain their setups. Lol. Well my question is. From you guys experience. How is the best way to set this tank up... I really want a 50/50 land/water build. Could water be kept at room temp? Could it house any fish? What does the land ares require. Basking light? If light? Give me a down and dirty please and thank you...

I'm in the process of building a 30 long for FBTs myself.

My ideas are these:

I'll have a lagoon area where the water is filtered and heated (I have one of those flat type mini heaters)

Then I'll have a gravel strip turning into the coconut fiber.

I already have a heat lamp for the top, but might not need it. Since it will be planted and a glass lid, the light for the plants might keep it warm enough.

I'll have some screen along the back strip for fresh air and to keep the pinhead crickets from getting out.

The whole design boils down to using a mix of Quikcrete and coconut fiber to build texture on the back glass, then formed into the waterfall/lagoon. At the base of the back wall texture I'll have a trough for planting vines to grow up the back wall.

All in all, they are supposed to do fine at about 73 degrees (average room temp)

How are you doing the background? Concrete holding husk up? That sounds awesome looking

Once we have it up and running, I'll be posting pictures. Right now it's in the "need to clean the tank and reseal" phase. The hubby will be doing the concrete work. I'm really looking forward to getting it going.

I did a pretty simple setup when I kept firebelly toads. The tank was a thirty long, about slightly more than half full of water with plastic plants (normal aquarium plants and tons of the reptile ones that attach with suction cups) and driftwood extending out of the water. A large fake rock sticking up in the center as well. I also had a plexiglass shelf siliconed just above the waterline covered in dried moss. No heater so it was at room tempature. For lighting I had a basic fluorescent aquarium strip and a heat lamp with a 20 watt bulb right over the moss. The water was filtered in tank with a submersible filter since I did have a fair amount. Screen top as well.
The setup was a whole lot more basic than Dragonfish71's sounds, but probably uglier as well since that one sounds sweet. The toads never minded though since there were plenty of times I had tadpoles. I kept both corys and zebra danios in there with them for various amonts of time with no problems. I don't know that it will work in a ten gallon though.

Here's the one I set up a few days ago. Made a tiki fountain from a reptofilter.. getting toads tomorrow...

Oh yuck yuck yuck yuck yuck. I live in Australia where toads are an absolute pest, they're cane toads though and nowhere near as colourful as these fire belly ones are.

Not the expected response lol. I am pretty excited about these guys

Fire belly toads are breeding. The tank doesn't have room for it for sure. Crazy bc I thought they needed to gobthroufh winter to mate... Guess captive bred changes stuff eventually...
