Fire Eel goes pale sometimes?

He still has his appetite and moves well. Maybe I had the aquarium light on too long for him? He's probably a mix of 2 eels- he has fire eel markings but is a medium brown with bits of red and orange. He got into the filter 3 days ago but he doesn't have scratches. He seems to be able to change color?? He turns almost light yellow. Maybe it's stress? Sometimes if I put melafix hell get pale it seems? Weird.

First of all, what size tank is this? Also, what is your filtration. What are your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels? If you tell us tgese it will be helpful. Also, what do you feed him?
