I just got back from my LFS and I got 4inch long fire mouth and a 5inch long convict.

At first they where shy, so I turned the light off. The fire mouth poked his frill/gill thing out and started chasing the convict.

So I put a cave in for him to hide in. The convict went in and the firemouth followed and it finally started defending itself. Everytime the firemouth tried to enter the convict would back it out with its frill/gill (that I didnt even know convicts had).

Is this normal or will they try and kill eachother????
At the LFS they were in the same tank.

Cichlids are normally aggressive and will seek to carve out a territory for themselves. Things should settle down if you provide hiding areas for both fish and the aquarium is of sufficient size. However, at some point the Convict may exceed the Firemouth in both size and aggression.
