I highly recommend the liquid test kit....it is more expensive but far more accurate. If your tank was not previously cycled then you are about to start experiencing some problems soon as the ammonia level rises. DOn't dispair...your frequent water changes will help tremendously.
Test the ammonia and do a water change anytime it test more than .25ppm the same for nitrite...when they both start testing 0 you are cycled and can add more fish if you like. :)
Read up on the nitrogen cycle here. Nitrogen Cycle
And don't give up. Once you get through the cycle it gets easier. :)
Good luck and happy fish keeping!

I agree with them, but i would suggest that you return those fish to the store, do a fishless cycle on your tanks, then get fish that are more suited for those two tanks. the barbs need a bigger tank than 10g and are much more peaceful when in groups of 5 or so. Depending on what kind of gourami you have, it may work in a 10g if its a dwarf, if not, you'll need a 30g tank for it too
