Fish compatability

I bought a 29 gallon starter tank and am interested in both cichlids and gourami. Would these two fish go together or is that a negative. If so how many fish would I be able to put in the tank, I know that the fish im interested in only grow 5-6" big.

To be honest I've never considered doing this and was either one or the other as centrepiece display. What sort of cichlids were you considering?

I was considering either an electric yellow cichlid (Labridocromis cearuleus I believe) or a peacock cichlid additionally the gourami would be a blue gourami (the one with the 3 dots on his side).

The 29g seems to be a bit small for the electric yellow or peacock unless you are planning on rehoming them. I'm thinking a 50g would be more appropriate.
