Fishless cycle question...

I am using a piece of cod about 2.5"×1.5" as my ammonia source. Two days ago my readings where .25 ammonia, 3.5ppm nitrite, and 15ppm nitrates. Today I pulled out the pantyhose that the cod is in and the outside has a whitish gel on it. Any ideas on what this is?

Sounds like it is doing what it is expected to, decomposing.

Probably fungus. Sound like your cycle is underway with nitrites and nitrates already.

Thanks, how long before it goes away? All my other cycled have used liquid ammonia as the ammonia source so this is all new to me.

3-6 weeks depending on the ammonia source and if any actual live rock was used. Already having established bacteria will shorten the cycle time.

I have 30 pounds of live rock, and if I go to the lfs tomorrow I might pick up a few more pounds.
