Fluval 405 (any of the exteral fluvals) over heating??

Y filter keeps making a weird sound like there's no water inside it, I open it up it's full as normal bit I feel the top housing bite and it's pretty dam warm. I then cool it down and it works fine, it then goes really hot again and stops working and the process starts again so any ideas? Has my fluval reached the end of its life? It 5 yeas old

When was the last time you cleaned and inspected the impellor?

You should clean the impeller and make sure the piece that clips in and holds the impeller is attached correctly, if it's broken you HAVE to get a new one

Last week I think.... Yeah I opened it and the plastic thing came off and I think it was shaking

The dish tank is in my room so if it happens again I'll wake up and I can fix it

Just buy a new plastic piece thing, I got mine from my lfs store for about $13

Okay it hasn't been playing up it might have just been where it simply came loess, I don't need to worry really I'm upgrading to the 406 at the end if the year so I won't need to worry. Thanks for your help
