Freshwater clam?

I saw a liveaquaria.com a freshwater clam for sale. I've never seen these before. It says they help clean the water and stay around 2 inches. Anybody ever owned these before?

Would they be ok in a 20 gallon with a bolivian ram, platy, and tetras?

I have ten of them. They are spread out amongst three of my tanks. They do not bother any if the fish because they are never above the gravel. The only time I see them is when i vacuum the gravel. I stir it up and they come up with it. Ten minutes later they burrow back into the gravel. Not too exciting. They are a natural filter but honestly, had I known they would never be seen, I wouldn't have bought them.

Do they lower nitrates at all?

Is it tru that the clams lay eggs in the fishes gills. Don't know if Its tru but that was what I heard
