specifically on the glass part of the hood, where the lights sit.

How can I rid myself of this? I tried just wiping it all off, but it has grown back.

That's BGA, and I'm running into the same problem. The water splashes onto the hood, and all of the nutrients combine with the high heat, high light and low CO2 to create a perfect BGA breeding ground.

Not sure it's necessarily BGA, but it is algae of some sort or another (probably many sorts together, actually). You're just gonna have to clean it off, there isn't any solution to that problem that I know of, short of suspending your lights and not using a cover (as I do, but my tank came with a wooden canopy with the lights 8" above the water surface). Fortunately it usually rinses off easily in the sink as long as you don't let it dry on there.

Mine definitely isn't BGA and I hope its not in FishyP's case ! I know what BGA is - from experience - UCK !
FishyP - does the stuff stink ? And does it grow in sheets or just splotches ?
