I'd really like to breed cardinals (and rummy nose) at some point, but I don't have experience with egg layers or fry even. What are some easier species that I might start out with to ease my learning curve?

The easiest egglayers to breed are probably the Zebra Danios, Brachydanio rerio. Definitely a good fish to get a start with. You could also consider most gouramis if you want the additional experience with bubble-nest builders.

Holly, I think the easiest to spawn are Rasboras and Serpae Tetras. You cnan condition them in your community tank, and when they are ready a 5 gal with Java moss on the bottom is all you need.

My experience is they spawn in the morninngs.
